This list is a free guide to help you find nurseries that share and advance our Wild Ones’ mission, fostering a deep commitment to selling native plant species to the public. This list is compiled by experts on our Wild Ones Board of Directors, and the nurseries in this guide do not pay to be included, nor do they receive compensation for participating.

Wild Ones’ definition of “native”
We use the Darke/Tallamy functional definition of “native” found in The Living Landscape: “A plant or animal that has evolved in a given place over a period of time sufficient to develop complex and essential relationships with the physical environment and other organisms in a given ecological community.”
About native species, nativars & cultivars
The nurseries included in this guide primarily focus on straight native species—plants that are genetically representative of what naturally occurs in the wild and provide critical ecological benefits. However, some nurseries may also carry cultivars, or “nativars,” which are cultivated varieties of native plants bred for specific traits, such as color or size. While nativars/cultivars can offer aesthetic value, they may not provide the same habitat benefits as true native species.
When shopping, we encourage you to ask questions and look closely at plant labels. Understanding the difference between native species and nativars/cultivars helps support biodiversity and the Wild Ones’ mission.
