As we approach Wild Ones Western New York’s first-ever Native Plant Day on June 14, we’re highlighting the amazing local nurseries participating in this region-wide celebration. Every few days, we’re featuring a different participating nursery to help you get to know the passionate people behind the plants—and inspire your own native gardening journey. Today, we’re featuring CW Native Plant Farm, run by Kathy Contrino—a familiar face within the Western New York native plant community. With over 20 years of experience and a deep commitment to education and personalized support, Kathy brings both expertise and heart to every plant she grows.

What inspired you to focus on native plants?
I began 20+ years ago. My ex-husband planted natives but didn’t take care of them. So I did—the rest is history.
What is your favorite native plant?
Spicebush.
What makes your nursery unique?
I spend quite a bit of time with customers helping them find the right plants.
What is one small thing a homeowner can do to help their native ecosystem?
Stop spraying pesticides and encourage your neighbors to stop as well.
Why shop at local native plant nurseries?
They often have locally sourced plant material.
Why are you excited about Wild Ones Native Plant Day on June 14?
Because it is an opportunity to showcase some fabulous natives.
Visit CW Native Plant Farm and other participating nurseries on Native Plant Day, Saturday, June 14—a one-of-a-kind celebration of true natives, local nurseries, and thriving ecosystems across Western New York. We’ll be introducing more of the growers involved in the days ahead, so stay tuned!
