Q&A with Joseph Han of The English Gardener: Cultivating Native Plant Passion in Western New York

Posted on | Chapter Event, Native Plant Day, Nursery Feature

As part of our lead‑up to Wild Ones Western New York’s inaugural Native Plant Day on June 14, we’re shining the spotlight on local native plant nurseries. Every few days, we are sharing a different feature to introduce you to the dedicated nurseries helping restore our regional ecosystems.

Today, we’re thrilled to showcase The English Gardener, led by Joseph Han, the chapter President of Wild Ones WNY. With deep roots in garden design, a passion sparked over dinner with Dr. Doug Tallamy, and a knack for championing unusual native species, Joseph is a steward of native plant advocacy in our area.

What inspired you to focus on native plants?
I attended Garden Design Conferences in Toronto, and invited 2020 keynote speaker Doug Tallamy to dinner after the conference. We discussed Nature’s Best Hope, and ever since then, we have focused more and more on the wonders of native plants and advocate for the “Home Grown National Park.”

What is your favorite native plant?
Can’t choose one—Aquilegia canadensis, Hibiscus moscheutos, and Pycnanthemum muticum.

What makes your nursery unique?
Unusual selection of native plants.

What is one small thing a homeowner can do to help their native ecosystem?
Plant three native plants, and help your friends plant three native plants too!
