As we gear up for Wild Ones Western New York’s first-ever Native Plant Day on June 14, we’re spotlighting the incredible native nurseries that make this celebration possible. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be featuring more participating nurseries to help you get to know the passionate people growing the native plant movement across our region.
First up: Royal Fern Nursery, located in Fredonia, NY.
If you haven’t yet discovered Royal Fern, it’s time to put them on your radar. This nursery is more than just a place to buy plants—it’s a mission-driven effort to restore Western New York’s ecosystems one true native at a time. We caught up with Jessica & Jonathan Townsend of Royal Fern to learn more about their work, their values, and why they’re excited to take part in Native Plant Day.

What inspired you to focus on native plants?
The more we learned about the vital role native plants play in our ecosystems, the more we realized there were very limited sources for true native plants. We feel it is our life’s mission to bring as many true natives back to our communities as possible.
What is your favorite native plant?
Impossible to answer!
What makes your nursery unique?
We are deeply committed to growing as much as possible from local genetics. While many nurseries import native plants from out-of-state suppliers, we responsibly collect local seeds, grow them out in a propagation garden to build our seed bank, and only then offer them to our customers.
This long but necessary process allows us to support vital restoration projects throughout Western New York. Nearly everything in our nursery has a local source—from the plants themselves to the supplies we use. We’ve even expanded our retail area to include locally made gifts, further supporting our regional economy.
What is one small thing a homeowner can do to help their native ecosystem?
Every native plant can make a positive impact. Always ask questions like:
- “Do you know the source of this plant?”
- “Is this a true native or a nativar/cultivar?”
Whenever possible, choose a true native. These plants support the delicate and essential relationships between local flora and fauna.
Why shop at local native plant nurseries?
Shopping local builds community. It keeps money circulating in your region and helps people reconnect—in person—with neighbors, growers, and the land. The ecological benefits are real and visible. We’re constantly amazed by how quickly pollinators find and utilize the plants in our gardens.
Why are you excited about Wild Ones Native Plant Day on June 14?
We’re thrilled to promote Wild Ones and the ideals behind this movement. Collaborations like Native Plant Day are important—and fun! Royal Fern is grateful to have the space to participate and help educate others about the power and beauty of native plants.
Join Royal Fern Nursery and other local nurseries across Western New York for Native Plant Day on Saturday, June 14—a region-wide celebration of true natives, community connection, and backyard biodiversity. Stay tuned as we introduce more of the inspiring nurseries participating in this inaugural event.
