As we count down to Wild Ones Western New York’s inaugural Native Plant Day on June 14, we’re continuing to highlight the incredible native plant nurseries across the region. Every few days, we’re featuring a different nursery to showcase the people and places helping restore Western New York’s ecosystems—one native plant at a time.
Today we’re excited to spotlight Urban Roots Cooperative Garden Market, located in the heart of Buffalo. As the only community-owned cooperative garden center in the country, Urban Roots offers something truly special: expert knowledge, fresh plant material, and a mission deeply aligned with ecological stewardship. We spoke with Patti from Urban Roots, who shared their approach to native plants and what makes this nursery such a beloved part of the community.

What inspired you to focus on native plants?
We feel very strongly about the importance of native plants and their place in people’s gardens for the benefit of not just beneficial insects but wildlife too. Knowing that wildlife can find shelter—and at the same time are not consuming invasive berries and spreading their range—is a big factor.
What is your favorite native plant?
All of them, but Vernonia has a special place in my heart. I love the way it blooms so late in the season while many plants are ending their show. Knowing that beneficial insects are getting their last meals before hibernation/diapause and the seeds feed many birds throughout the winter makes me feel like I am really helping out.
What makes your nursery unique?
We are a small garden market, so we are regularly getting new, fresh plant material in. Nothing sits in the yard for long periods of time, so plants are not stressed from sitting in pots. We are also the country’s only community-owned cooperative garden center. Gardeners have invested in this business and have a say in what we carry and what we do. We are open to the general public—you do not need to be an owner to shop with us.
What is one small thing a homeowner can do to help their native ecosystem?
At the very least, add one native plant to your garden each year. And not just native perennials—native trees and shrubs too! Many people think of natives as just flowering perennials, but there are so many wonderful native trees and shrubs that help our ecosystem.
Why shop at local native plant nurseries?
Local nurseries are going to be able to educate gardeners more thoroughly. They help people understand the importance of natives, the differences between natives and nativars, and what conditions are needed to help the plant grow to its fullest.
Why are you excited about Wild Ones Native Plant Day on June 14?
We are looking forward to having a dedicated Native Plant Day where folks can learn more about natives and their relationship to the environment.
Visit Urban Roots Cooperative Garden Market and many other nurseries on Native Plant Day, Saturday, June 14, and experience what it means to support a nursery built by—and for—the community.
